Responsible Carrier Program

The industry-initiated Responsible Carrier Program (RCP) is designed as a framework for continuously improving the industry's safety performance. American Waterways Operators (AWO) members use the RCP as a guide in developing company-specific safety and environmental programs that are tailored to the unique operational environments found in the barge and towing industry. The program complements and builds upon existing government regulations, requiring company safety standards that exceed those required by federal law or regulation. Being a "Responsible Carrier" is a condition of membership for AWO.

Many of our consultants are AWO Certified RCP Auditors, and are available to help in a variety of areas related to the RCP, including:

  • Training to Support Compliance with RCP Requirements
  • Ongoing Involvement in Program Operations as Desired by Customers
  • Initial RCP Development
  • Independent Third-Party Audits
  • Internal Management and/or Vessel Audits

Our AWO Certified RCP Auditors are also certified to conduct audits of the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Responsible Care initiative, in conjunction with RCP audits. Responsible Care is a global initiative that is practiced currently in 52 countries, which share a common commitment to advancing the safe and secure management of chemcial products and processes. Through the Responsible Care initiative, member companies improve their environmental, health, safety and security performance. Participation in Responsible Care is mandatory for ACC member companies.
